No Tech Skills, No Problem: How Digital Learning Is Redefining Retirement for Over-50s

Lucy Walter’s story proves digital literacy can be a retirement game-changer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BRISBANE, Queensland - April 1, 2025 - eBusiness Institute coach Lucy Walter has revealed how she transitioned from near bankruptcy to financial freedom, achieving early retirement through digital business skills in a recent interview on the Digital Investors Podcast

After learning to buy and renovate websites with no prior technical knowledge, Walter now earns six-figure monthly income working just 10-20 hours weekly while helping others create similar retirement pathways.

Walter and her husband Gary approached eBusiness Institute in 2014 when their multimillion-dollar importing and manufacturing business was failing after the Global Financial Crisis. With mounting financial pressure and limited digital skills, they were exploring bankruptcy options.

"We were virtually drawing no income, just making sure our staff got their pay. We were literally going down the path of exploring what bankruptcy meant. That was how serious it had got," Walter explained. "We had no understanding of digital business. We knew what a website was, used spreadsheets, did emails, online banking. That was how basic our skills were."

Under the guidance of eBusiness Institute founder Matt Raad, the couple started small, purchasing $200 websites to learn the fundamentals before gradually scaling their investments

"We treated it almost like a university degree," said Walter. "We behaved ourselves the first year, and by about month 11, we had our first thousand dollars monthly income. By month 18, we hit our hundred thousand dollars month goal. It then started to snowball.

The financial transformation enabled the couple to retire on their 40-acre property in Queensland's hinterland. Gary is fully retired, while Lucy continues managing a small portfolio of websites and coaches eBusiness Institute students.

"My average week is probably 10 hours, sometimes 20, depending on what I'm working on," Walter noted. "It doesn't feel like work. I could just do this forever. I don't want to be that old lady sitting there doing crosswords. I want to be that old lady sitting there building websites and having fun, getting them ranked."

Matt Raad emphasized that Walter's success demonstrates how digital skills can transform retirement prospects for those willing to learn. "If you're in that 50-plus age group, it is worth getting the knowledge skills here and going forward," said Raad. "The main risk in this is actually knowledge risk. You just got to learn off someone."

Walter now advocates for digital reskilling among retirees in her community, many of whom face financial constraints despite working their entire lives.

"We live in an area where there are a lot of self-funded retirees, but that's not the luxurious life a lot of people imagine," said Walter. "We will never ever need the government pension because of what we have. I just wish all the people that live in our area could do the same thing."

Walter encourages those approaching retirement to start planning earlier: "Back up 10 years from your retirement date and start training for it now."
