Mobile apps that adapt as you move about inside museums, art galleries and exhibitions
A consortium formed by Smarttrack RFID, RAMP RFID, MOB and the Powerhouse Museum is delighted to be selected as one of the first recipients of funding from the NSW Government under the Collaborative Solutions program. Announced on Tuesday 31 May, the NSW Government’s Collaborative Solutions programme aims to help build the digital economy in NSW.
The Sydney-based Smarttrack-led consortium is developing an indoor tracking solution that enables cultural institutions to easily create rich, location aware, mobile apps.
Julian Bickersteth, Director of Smarttrack RFID said, “I’m excited that the NSW Government has recognised our potential to develop a world-leading solution by supporting the collaboration between the members of our consortium.”
Called moveME, this mobile technology will enable the development of engaging mobile apps for visitors that adapt as you move about museums, art galleries and exhibitions.
moveMe will ease the development of smartphone and tablet applications delivering additional information on objects in exhibitions and collections. It will actively deliver content based on the user’s location, and the direction they are facing.
Julian Bickersteth said, “As mobile technology moves from the hearing mode to the seeing mode, there is a fantastic opportunity to deliver a whole new level of access to objects, exhibitions and collections in our museums and galleries.”
moveME will also assist museums and galleries to quickly and cost effectively install indoor location tracking infrastructure and reporting tools.
It will provide institutions with the ability to gather detailed visitor numbers enhanced by information about the visitor journeys and dwell times. This will provide new and valuable insights for curators and exhibition designers along with a whole new way to experiment with design and layout of their physical spaces and objects. Ultimately, it will allow institutions to refine the content delivered to visitors to reflect their interests, as demonstrated by actual visitors to the museum, gallery or exhibition.
Kevin Cohen, CEO of RAMP RFID said “This project has given us the opportunity to further develop our Locamate mobile tracking technology and to work with our partners to implement and test in a live environment. We see massive potential in taking this solution global and are excited by the opportunities”.
The funding from the Collaborative Solutions program will go toward developing a prototype of the full solution. A trial will be implemented in the second half of 2011 at the Powerhouse Museum's Love Lace International Lace Awardexhibition. (http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/lace/ )
The Powerhouse Museum is a global leader in adoption of emerging technologies within the museum sector and it makes perfect sense for them to be a part of this innovative consortium.

The Collaborative Solutions program has created an opportunity for technology companies that would not normally come into contact with each other to work together on a goal that has a global audience. This leverages the strengths of the individual companies.
