Melbourne IT welcomes Bruce Tonkin’s appointment as Vice-Chair of ICANN

Announcement posted by Melbourne IT 28 Jun 2011

Melbourne, Australia – 28 June 2011 – Melbourne IT’s ongoing commitment to the development of the Internet industry was recognised on Friday with Melbourne IT Chief Strategy Officer, Dr Bruce Tonkin, being elected Vice-Chair of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

“Bruce’s appointment to the position of ICANN Vice-Chair recognises Bruce’s tireless efforts on the ICANN Board and as an ambassador for the Internet.  It is thoroughly deserved,” Melbourne IT CEO & Managing Director, Theo Hnarakis, said.

“Bruce’s appointment is also a proud moment for Melbourne IT and recognises our company’s ongoing commitment to the future of the Internet.  Melbourne IT has an enviable track record in the industry and the company has consciously invested in having our Chief Strategy Officer participate in ICANN since 2002.”

Melbourne IT was the first commercial administrator of the .com.au namespace in the late nineties and was selected as one of the first five registrars to sell .com, .org and .net names in 1999 when the domain industry began to be deregulated.  The company is now one of the world’s largest domain registrars and delivers a broad range of IT services including online brand protection and corporate domain management.

Bruce Tonkin was elected to ICANN’s Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO) Council in 2001, and became chair of the GNSO Council in 2002.  He was elected to the ICANN Board in 2007 and re-elected in March 2010 for a second three year term.

“Bruce has done a sterling job in contributing to policy development at ICANN, and is widely recognised within the technology trade and by his ICANN Board peers as one the most respected domain name experts working in the industry today,” Mr Hnarakis said.
