About Us

One Laptop per Child ( http://www.laptop.org) is a non-profit organisation created by Nicholas Negroponte and others from the MIT Media Lab to design, manufacture and distribute laptop computers that are sufficiently inexpensive to provide every child in the world access to knowledge and modern forms of education. XO laptops are rugged, based on open source technology, and so energy efficient that they can be powered with solar energy. They can be used easily in indoor and outdoor settings and use mesh networking technology to enable the computers to connect to each other and the Internet. One Laptop per Child Australia's mission for Oceania is simple: To create educational opportunities for the region's poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful and self-empowered learning. When children have access to this type of tool they get engaged in their own education. They learn, share, create and collaborate. They become connected to each other, to the world and to a brighter future. The XO laptops are on trial in Australia and have already been deployed in Niue, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Kiribati, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Tuvalu.
